Area of Intrest & Research:

1. A STUDY OF POUNDING BETWEEN ADJACENT STRUCTURES

 Overview:

Collision of buildings or different parts of the building during vibration is called pounding. Pounding between closely spaced structures can be a serious hazard in seismically active metropolitan areas. One of the key issues is estimating the required separation distance to avoid or reduce pounding of adjacent structures that vibrate either elastically or inelastically. Series of dynamic time history analysis can estimate this distance by obtaining the maximum relative distance of the adjacent structures. The effect of pounding increases as the building height increases. When building heights do not match, the roof of the shorter building may pound at the mid height of the taller one, this can be very dangerous. This may happen not only in buildings but also bridges and towers which are constructed closely to each other. In bridges it happens between the two adjacent bridge decks. To avoid this effect we have to provide sufficient seated length between the decks or to provide shock absorbing devices between the decks and bearings under the extremities of the decks.

Most of the world regulations for seismic design do not take into account pounding phenomena. Some countries like Argentina, Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Indonesia, Peru, Mexico, Taiwan and USA specify a minimum gap between adjacent buildings. The minimum separation gap depends on the height of building and on the flexibility of the building. The gap between buildings should exceed the maximum drift of each story.
